CWJ Newsletter December 17, 2012

Sept 13 and then again on the 24th found my sewer backing up. For anyone who has tried fighting a flood in their basement, I need say no more. But the real news came when I discovered the City had passed a new By-Law in July that stated that the pipe between my house and wherever it connected to the main sewer was my responsibility. After 17 years here I discover thay 'my' pipe goes underneath a very-well-travelled road and joins the main on the other side. Between the traffic, the construction and the road repairs they happened to make over my pipe, it was bent out of shape and trapped water in the bend that was refusing to let anything go further--and that section was pinpointed to be right under the road. So I was in a dispute with the City over the replacement of the sewer pipe under the road in front of my house. In the end they fixed it at their expense, but it was a six week battle that wrecked havoc on my schedule, nerves, and first quarter this fall. (Obviously a far too long story.)

After that, the clean up and re-assembling of my house took another large chunk of time. And now we're back to work, our real work.

Canadian Writers' Contest Calendar 2013

The 2013 Canadian Writers' Contest Calendar is shipping now. As every year for the past 11 years, every database line has been carefully checked and re-checked. Some contests are back after a few years absence. The good news is that contest that are starting up are finding us and forwarding their information for inclusion.

This year has also had another trend that I could not have foreseen: people who have not gotten a CWCC--sometimes since 2004-- are back. We mail to everyone on our list and I have not yet determined the point when we should stop those mailings. In the case where the envelope is returned to us and we have an email address, we send the information to them that way. Unless we do receive a new address, those people fall off the list. There are a few each year who request that we stop mailing to them, and of course we comply with their wishes. But these are the only ways that we stop the annual mailings. This year the list was just over 1,200 envelopes. And because of the upset, the last 400 of them did not go out until early November. So to accomodate those people, we have extended the pre-publication discount until December 15th, 2012 at which time the only PayPal options on the site will be at full price. Right now we have both options on the page. I hope it has not been too confusing for everyone. It is the first time in 11 years that the pre-publication offer has overlapped the actual mailing. If you hang around long enough, you get to see a lot of strange things.
